Haiti
For 20 years I have traveled to to work among the poor at a small mission hospital in a remote area of Haiti. After responding to Haiti's devastating earthquake in January, 2010, I founded the non-profit organization Starfysh that has enhanced my effectiveness in bringing a little hope to that struggling, impoverished land. We have chosen to focus our work in one of the poorest areas in Haiti: the island of La Gonave. A place where...
- Where more than half of her workers make less than one dollar per day.
- Where the Global Hunger Index ranks as "alarming."
- Where 1 of every 13 children die before their 5th birthday.
- Where 40% of the population is under 14 years old.
- Where 3 of every 4 children under 5 are malnourished and underweight.
- Where 2 of every 3 children are anemic.
- Where 1 of every 3 children are infected with intestinal parasites.
- Where diarrheal illness (contracted from unclean water) kills more people than any other disease.
